Choose between AMD and Intel for your desktop PC processor

The first microprocessor to be commercially launched was the Intel 4004 in 1970. The most popular variant, the Intel 8080, was released in 1974 and revolutionized nearly every processing area. To improve their architecture and create an instruction set that was incompatible with their outdated hardware and software, mainframe and minicomputer manufacturers engaged in competition by launching their own proprietary IC development projects. Microprocessors are now often referred to as CPUs due to their widespread use in personal computers. But microprocessors brought compact CPUs with a significantly lower number of integrated circuits (ICs) that may be assembled in a single processing chip. Previously, multiple small ICs were utilized on one or more circuit boards.

Comparison Of Popular Processor Brands

There are two well-known computer processor companies in Bangladesh: AMD and Intel. While AMD does have a few active series, Intel remains the market leader.

Types of Processor

Intel Processor

Intel is an acronym for "Integrated Electronics." Intel offers a variety of CPU series, including the Celeron, Pentium, and Core. The Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and the high-performance Core i9 are the CPUs in the Core Series. The oldest one that is currently accessible is the fourth generation. Performance is further improved by integrated HD graphics and turbo boost technology. Other Intel CPUs are available in price levels ranging from cheap to expensive. Intel offers high-end HEDT Processors for gaming and content development. They provide CPUs like Celeron, Atom, and Pentium for less money. Intel CPUs can handle the newest high-speed DDR3 and DDR4 RAM. DDR5 RAM is compatible with the newest 12th Generation CPUs. Thunderbolt, Hi-speed USB, and Wi-Fi 802.11ax connectors are built into the Intel CPU.

AMD Processors

Advanced Micro Devices is what AMD stands for. As a second source manufacturer, it began providing 32-bit x86 CPUs before entering the market with their first Am386 CPU. AMD is well-known for their "Ryzen" processor family, which was the first to use the new Zen microarchitecture at the consumer level when it was originally shown in 2017. Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, and Ryzen 9 CPUs are part of AMD's Ryzen processor series. While Ryzen 3's 3200G, 2200G, and 1200 series; Ryzen 5's 3400G, 3500, 3500X, 3600, 3600X, 2400G, 2600, and 2600X; Ryzen 7's 3800X, 3700X, 3800X, 2700, and 2700X; and Ryzen 9's 3900X 3950X are the main AMD Ryzen processor models. There are four CPUs in the Ryzen Threadripper series: 1900X, 1920X, 2970WX, and 2990WX. AMD is also the owner of the Epyc series. Generally speaking, they work with DDR3 and DDR4 DIMM RAMs. The newest high-speed DDR5 RAM will be compatible with the AMD Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, and Ryzen 9 processors, which are all part of the 5th generation.

Gaming Processor

A strong CPU is necessary for smooth gameplay and excellent frame rates for gamers. For gaming rigs, processors with several cores and higher clock rates are favored since they offer the performance needed for engaging gaming experiences.

Laptop Processor

Thermal control and power economy are given primary priority in laptop CPUs, sometimes referred to as mobile processors. Popular choices that provide a good mix of performance and battery life for portable computing include AMD Ryzen Mobile CPUs and the Intel Core i series.

Desktop Processor

Desktop CPUs are designed to meet a variety of computer applications and are centered around performance and adaptability. Desktop CPUs from the AMD Ryzen and Intel Core series provide a wide range of choices, whether you're creating an affordable PC or a high-end gaming setup.

Budget Processor

For simple computer operations like word processing, multimedia playing, and web surfing, budget processors provide affordable options. CPUs from AMD Athlons and Intel Pentium are popular options for low-cost constructions that don't sacrifice performance.

Processor Graphics

Integrated graphics are a feature of some CPUs. This kind of CPU eliminates the requirement for a separate graphics card. A small number of Intel Core and Pentium CPU models lack integrated graphics, although the majority include integrated graphics. Conversely, integrated graphics are a feature of select Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 CPUs. Integrated graphics are also a feature of AMD Athlon CPUs. However, you will need to purchase a graphics card for other AMD models as they do not come with graphics. In any case, a dedicated graphics card is a requirement whether you play video games or edit videos.

Processor Core

Graphics integration is a feature of several CPUs. This kind of CPU does not require an additional graphics card. Though certain versions lack integrated graphics, integrated graphics are a feature of almost all Intel Core and Pentium CPUs. Some Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 CPUs, on the other hand, come with integrated graphics. In-built graphics are another feature of AMD Athlon CPUs. You must purchase a graphics card as some AMD devices do not have graphics. Regardless, you need to have a dedicated graphics card if you're a gamer or video editor.

FAQs

What is the difference between cores and threads in a desktop processor?

- Cores are physical processing units within a CPU that can independently execute instructions. Threads, on the other hand, are virtual processing units that allow each core to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

How does clock speed affect the performance of a desktop processor?

- Clock speed, measured in GHz (gigahertz), represents the number of cycles per second that a processor can execute.

What is cache memory, and how does it impact desktop processor performance?

- Cache memory, particularly the L3 cache, is a small, high-speed memory located on the processor die.

What is thermal design power (TDP), and why is it important for desktop processors?

- Thermal design power (TDP) represents the maximum amount of heat generated by a processor under typical workloads.
